Thrive Africa Impact

Since 2020*, Thrive Africa has made significant strides in expanding the vegan food justice movement across Africa. To date, we’ve observed an exponential growth in the Africa plant-based food systems movement resulting in part, from Thrive’s movement-building work.

Thive’s Africa movement-building consists of grantmaking, the Thrive Africa Accelerator, which trains organizations in campaign strategy and organization management, the Thrive Africa Vegan Women’s Initiative which offers leadership development to women-identified advocates, and the world’s first, second, and third pan-Africa-wide joint plant-based campaigns, the Thrive Africa Vegan Restaurant Week, Thrive Africa Vegan School Lunch Campaign, and Thrive Africa Plant-Powered Holidays.

Thrive Africa is developed using an equitable Participatory Co-Design Approach and is guided by Africa-based staff and advisors, this ensures work is regionally impactful culturally appropriate, and avoids Western colonialism.

These numbers are current as of January 2025 and will be periodically updated.

*2020-2022, Thrive Africa was housed at a previous organization with a different name but with the exact same team and leadership. Upon Thrive’s launch, it transitioned to Thrive with the same managing team.

AFRICA VEGAN WOMEN’S INITIATIVE

The Thrive Africa Vegan Women’s Initiative was created after we observed a significantly lower number of women applying for grants and joining Thrive Africa projects. The Thrive Africa Vegan Women’s Initiative aims to increase leadership skills for women-identified advocates, remove barriers to grant funding, and offer a safe network of advocates.

The Thrive Africa Vegan Women’s Initiative has resulted in the most women-led granted projects we’ve ever observed.
